With the support of ED/IES SBIR grants, Gigantic Mechanic is currently developing VOXPOP: role-plays for high school U.S. history and social studies classrooms in which students work together to tackle historical crises such as the Shays Rebellion and the Pullman Strike.
How can we expect kids to understand the perspectives of 18th century rebels when we can’t even talk across party lines today? A year of play-testing VOXPOP with high school students around the country suggests kids are eager to engage with tough moral perspectives. Historical thinking provides a pathway for students to engage with modern civic issues and diverse perspectives.
